Birch Cottage Bed and Breakfast

Birch Cottage is a traditional Highland cottage refurbished to a high standard. We have two double rooms, and one twin-bedded room. Both rooms are en-suite, with hospitality tray. Breakfast is served in the dining room normally between 8am and 9am, but please do let us know if you require an earlier start, or if you have any food allergies or special dietary requirements. You may choose from fresh fruit, juice, yoghurts and cereals for a healthy start to the day, or enjoy a full traditional breakfast with a choice of bacon, sausage, black pudding, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms and baked beans. Or alternatively, you may have an omelette, kippers, or scrambled egg and smoked salmon.
Birch Cottages’ speciality is the hospitality of Ray and Linda, and the quality of the meals served in the intimate, candle-lit dining room. Ray has 40 years experience as a chef and takes great pride in the presentation and quality of food that he prepares from locally sourced ingredients, and when in season vegetables from the garden. And though Birch Cottage does not have a liquor licence, guests are welcome to bring their own beer or wine to enjoy with their meals with no charge being made for corkage.

Garve is a great base from which to tour the Highlands with both the very beautiful west and east coasts just a short drive away, and Birch Cottage is on the A835 Inverness to Ullapool road. There are many fascinating places to visit such as Loch Ness, Glen Affric, Culloden, Fort George, the Black Isle, Ullapool, Applecross and Skye. We have many golden sandy beaches, gardens such as Inverewe, Attadale and Kylesku, distilleries including Glen Morangie, Dalmore, Glen Ord, the Black Isle Brewery, and the Moniack winery. There are several castles to visit within a short driving distance - Inverness castle, Cawdor, Brodie, Urquhart, Leod and Dunrobin, and also many museums. The pretty Victorian spa village of Strathpeffer is only 7 miles away, where you can visit the old pump room, and the Victorian museum of childhood, and maybe fit in a round of golf!
For the more energetic guests, there are many Munros within a short driving distance ie. Ben Wyvis, the Fannichs, Torridon, the Ullapool hills, Glen Affric, or Beinn Eighe. If you prefer a more gentle walk then there are also many of these to choose from, a lovely one being on our doorstep (Little Garve) which takes you gently either side of the river Blackwater. Rogie Falls are only a 10 minute drive away, where you may be lucky enough to see the salmon battling their way upstream. There are several circular routes from Birch Cottage which make for a wonderful day out before returning in the evening to a very tasty freshly prepared evening meal. We can provide you with a packed lunch, and after eating a hearty breakfast you can set off for a very enjoyable day out, where you might be lucky enough to see an eagle, or kites, or dolphins, and more likely than not to see deer. The Falls of Measach are worth visiting on your way to Ullapool or Gairloch. Ullapool is just a short drive away from Garve, and then there is Knockan Crag and and its visitor centre explaining the geology of Scotland, and how Scotland was once joined to America!! Cape Wrath and Smoo Cave will enthrall the keen photographers, as will the many deer and big birds seen en-route. Garve is on the Kyle line - a very scenic train journey to the Kyle of Lochalsh. Applecross, Plockton, the Falls of Shin and the Summer Isles all make for great days out with breathtaking scenery. Theres lots of golf to chose from - Strathpeffer, Muir of Ord, Loch Carron, Ullapool to name but a few. Then theres fishing, sea fishing from Ullapool or fly fishing locally.
